The 2018 Work Meeting for Undergraduate Teaching Held in Chang’an Campus

On July 7th, our university held the work meeting for Undergraduate Teaching in Chang’an campus. With the theme of "putting the undergraduate first, deepening reforms, enhancing cohesion and improving quality", this meeting is aimed at implementing the spirit of the National Conference on Undergraduate Education in Colleges and Universities in the New Era, summarizing the achievements and experience of undergraduate training in recent years, and advancing the complete credit system with the opportunity of evaluating and rectification to build the first-class talent training system. It was a conference with far-reaching effect focusing on students-oriented educational reform since the beginning of this century.
The attendants included Liu Jianlin, the Deputy Director-General of Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education and other officials, all the leaders of our university, members of the Teaching and Instruction Committee, members of the Teaching and Steering Committee of the university, the master teachers at the provincial level, the heads of departments, the directors and leading members of the schools, departments, institutes, and centers, the experimental teaching demonstration center at the provincial level, the director of the Virtual Simulation Center and the school counselors, the teacher and student representatives. The meeting was presided over by Wang Yaoyu, vice president of the university.
Liu Jianlin pointed out that it was held at a good time and with a good theme, having set an example for the universities in the province. In the aspect of undergraduate work of the University, he stressed that the spirit of the National Educational Work Conference should be implemented and the “four returns” should be advanced. Besides, the teaching should be reformed to create the first-class undergraduate education. He said that, in the face of new opportunities and challenges, Northwest University must work hard to seize the opportunity of the “Double-first Class” initiative of China and the "Four First-Class" plan of Shaanxi province. In order to further deepen the reform of talent training mode, we should explore the reform pattern of credit system with Chinese experience, Shaanxi characteristics and the features of Northwest University. In this way we can make the strongest voice of Northwest University and the higher education of Shaanxi to China and the whole world.
Guo Lihong made a report on his work on behalf of the university, in which he pointed out that we must unswervingly adhere to the basic position of the undergraduate teaching talent training on considering the teaching quality as the lifeline and the teaching work as the footstone of the university. Firstly, we must conscientiously implement the spirit of the National Education Conference and concentrate our efforts on undergraduate education and teaching. The university would adhere to the basic status of undergraduate education and talent training through observing the law of education, returning to the nature of teaching, persisting in undergraduate orientation, and focusing on "building the first-class majors, developing the first-class teaching and cultivating the first-class talents" to lay a solid foundation for the first-class university. Secondly, we should carry out undergraduate teaching assessment and rectification, and fully demonstrate the potential of first-class undergraduate education. We should take the evaluation as an opportunity to foster the top-level design of teaching, deepen the reform with greater determination and courage, solve difficult problems, unleash energies, strengthen motivates and reinforce advantages. As for talent training in the new period, we should base it on the reality of the university with a global perspective to form the training mode with the characteristics of the university. Thirdly, we must comprehensively promote the reform of the complete credit system with the characteristics of Northwest University to build a first-class talent training system, because the credit system is an inevitable choice for the development of higher education. After the unified deployment of the comprehensive reform of the talent training in the university and the extensive research and careful study in the early period, the university has issued The Comprehensive Reform Implementation Plan of the Complete Credit System of Northwest University, which revolves around "adhering to the one foundation", "realizing the five major goals", "grasping the three tasks" and "strengthening the two guarantees " to promote the comprehensive reform of the complete credit system. In the end, he stressed that we should reform the complete credit system with high-end start, late-mover advantages and the features of Northwest University through "combining with the concept of innovation and reform advocated by the university, the reform of colleges and departments, technical innovation and the double first-class construction".
In the conference, different departments reported on the teaching work of their unit, and put forward a tentative plan for the reform of the credit system, which included the Department of Geology, School of Economics and Management, School of Marxism, School of Foreign Languages, School of Information Technology, the College of Life Science, the Office of Student Affairs, and the head of the Logistics Group.
In the afternoon, the representatives were divided into three groups including the public courses group, the liberal arts group and the science and engineering group and had a discussion. Then the leaders of the groups reported the discussion results at the conference.
In the concluding speech, Wang Yajie pointed out that the conference was valuable and important for undergraduate education. He stressed that we should adhere to the "good quality of undergraduate education" and take up the mission of higher education. He pointed out that undergraduate education was always the main body and first priority in the reform and development of universities. Under the new situation, background, task and challenge, it was necessary to think more about whether the goal and direction of talent training were clear, and whether the corresponding training methods and supporting means were in place. The faculty and the departments of management and service should actively adapt to the requirements of teaching reform and development, strengthen the consciousness of the overall situation, the sense of responsibility, unify understanding, form a joint force, revolve around the complete credit system reform, change the concept of teaching ideas, adjust and perfect the management and service mode, and ensure smooth development of the complete credit system reform. He stressed the need to strengthen the top-level design, and improve the institutional guarantee. Revolving around the subject of teachers and students, we should perfect the design of teaching reform system and further improve the teaching quality evaluation system so that the quality of teachers' teaching and the quality of students' training will be promoted synchronously to achieve the goal of reform. Based on the "Trinity" training mode, we must strengthen the cultivation of thinking ability, improve the knowledge system, foster a good learning atmosphere, and strive to improve the quality of undergraduate education. He finally stressed that the university should form a linkage system to guarantee the quality of teaching in all directions. The six major strategies identified by the university in 13th Five-Year Plan are interrelated. With the quality of undergraduate trainings as the core and foundation of talent training, we must guarantee the quality of all work for cultivating high-quality talents. It was necessary to persist in reform and opening to stimulate the internal vitality and motivation of teaching, and form the characteristics of Northwest University. The good practice should be solidified with institution through establishing the system in order to promote the rule of law. Only when all the members and all aspects of Northwest University are connected to form a coherent supporting system, will the goal of improving the quality of undergraduate education be realized.
With a clear and profound theme, the conference pointed out the direction for deepening the reform of education and teaching, embodied the consensus, promoted the spirit and created an atmosphere, which would be taken as the starting point to promote the complete credit system reform in an all-round way, create a new situation of undergraduate teaching, and speed up the "double first-class" construction.
