Professor Hong Gao (Hung Kao) is one of the founders of modern instrumental analysis in China, and also the famous analytical chemist and educator in the world.
Prof. Hong Gao was born in June, 1918 at Jingyang County of Shaanxi Province. In 1943, he graduated from the Chemistry department of National Central University. And in 1947 he got the Ph.D. degree at University of Illinois in America，and then went back to China in 1948. After that he served as a professor and tenured professor in Nanjing University and Northwest University, director of Environmental Science Research Institute in Nanjing University, director of Institute of Analytical Science in Northwest University, chairman of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee in Northwest University, director of Electroanalytical Chemistry Key Lab of Shaanxi Province, the Decision-making Advisory Committee Invited Members of Shaanxi Province and other staff. In particular, he was elected as the member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980，the first batch experts of national outstanding contributions and the first senior academician of the glorious title. From 1981 to 1992, he served as the Member of the Standing Committee of the Department of Chemistry. In 1962 and1977，he participated in the National Natural Science Fund subject development planning work. He was the first and second Discipline Assessment Group member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council，the first to the third the National Natural Science Fund Committee chemistry review group member and group leader of analytical chemistry，the National Natural Science Award Committee member of disciplinary review group and the State Science and Technology Commission chemical group member. He also was the director of the Chinese Chemical Society and deputy director of the Analytical Chemistry Committee；Electroanalytical Committee member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)；advisory editor of "Trends in Analytical Chemistry”；the managing editor, the editorial board member and the consultant of “Chemical Journal of Chinese Universities”and“Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry” and other magazines.
Prof. Gao specializes in the study of instrumental analysis, especially the study of electrochemical analysis. He had verified a diffusion current formula of spherical electrode to solve the outstanding and long-term issues in the polarographic analysis, derived a diffusion current formula of spherical amalgam electrode; and on this basis, presented a simple, rapid determination method of diffusion coefficient of metal in the mercury. He has developed 19 new electrochemical theory formula through a rigorous mathematical treatment for linear variable bit polarographic and square wave polarography, AC polarography and other important modern polarographic electrode process. He also opened up a new field of analytical chemistry - oscillographic analysis. Up to now,he has published more than 300 papers in the area of electroanalytical chemistry, and 5 books including Instrumental Analysis, Theory of Polarographic Current, Oscillographic Titration and so on. Among them, the Instrumental Analysis and the polarographic current theory got the first prize of the National Excellent books respectively in 1992 and 1988, and the oscillographic titration got Grand Prize of Higher outstanding academic book in 1992. And these research results won the National Science Conference Award, the third prize of National Natural Science and Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and technological progress awards and so on.
