Gong Chongqi was born inHuaifang City,ShandongProvince in April 1921. Before the War of Liberation, he studied atSuixianMiddle Schooland was engaged in Vanguard of National Liberation and the Anti-Japanese and National Salvation Movement. Later, he went to Yan’an, studying at a public school for training cadres in Northern Shaanxi in 1940, and then at the School of Social Science and School of Administration of Yan’an University in 1943. From 1944 to 1948, he taught in turn atSanbianPublic School,SuideNormal SchoolandMizhiMidldleSchool. He has held a number of important posts in past decades, including Secretary of the Department of Culture and Education in the Northwest Commission of Military Affairs and Politics in 1949; Vice Chairman of the Committee of Studies and Head of Marxism-Leninism Department, Northwest Agricultural University (currently Northwest A&F University); Professor and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Xi’an Normal University; Dean of Studies, Vice President, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of Discipline Inspection Commission of Shaanxi Normal University (since 1960). In August 1975, he was transferred to Northwest University as Director of Teaching Affairs and Vice President, and then served as President of Northwest University in 1982, Secretary of the Party Committee of Northwest University in 1984, Advisor to Northwest University in 1985, and has been a Member of the Advisory Committee of Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the CPC since 1985. His other important titles include being the Vice Chairman of the Society for the History of the China International Communism Movement; the Chairman of the Society for the History of Shaanxi International Communism Movement; Vice Chairman of the Society of Higher Education Research; Vice Chairman of the Shaanxi Federation of Social Science Circles; Director of the China Association for International Exchange, Director of the Shaanxi People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and others. Over the past 50 years of teaching and administration, Gong lectured on New Democracy, the History of the Communist Party of China, Philosophy, an Introduction to Marxism-Leninism, Selected Readings from Classics Works, and so on. He has long been engaged in promoting educational reform and attaches great importance to training talents, stressing the learning of background knowledge, fundamental theories, basic skills and education through social practice. In particular, while serving at Northwest University in the wake of the serious damages caused by “Cultural Revolution”, he spared no effort to improve teaching and academic conditions, to develop new disciplines and to strengthen foreign language teaching by means of rectifying and restoring teaching order. Moreover, in aiming to develop foreign exchanges, cooperative relationships have been established between a number of colleges and universities in the United States, Japan and elsewhere. He has published a great number of works, including articles about Marxist-Leninist theory in Humanity and Ideological Front in the 1950s; The Worker-peasant Alliance is the Base of People’s Democratic Dictatorship; What is Socialist and What is Socialist Revolution? (Shaanxi People’s Publishing House); General Politics (Gansu People’s Publishing House; 1992). The latter was awarded the 1989-1992 Shaanxi Provincial Excellent Achievement Prize in Social Science.
