Recently, “The List of National and Provincial First-class Undergraduate Majors” has been issued by the General Office of the Ministry of Education. 24 majors at NWU appear on the list. These, therefore, account for nearly 30% of the current undergraduate majors on offer at this institution. The number of approved majors exceeds that of other universities in Mainland China and ranks first among universities under the jurisdiction of the Shaanxi government and those located in Shaanxi but sponsored by the central government.
Since the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, NWU has continuously deepened its comprehensive reform to majors, and has successively issued framework documents, such as the “NWU Undergraduate Education Quality Improvement Plan” and the “NWU Committee of the CPC’s Guidance on Strengthening First-class Undergraduate Education in the New Era”. These documents place emphasis on the construction of subject majors, in particular those with distinctive characteristics, as a means of reinforcing the core strengths of undergraduate teaching.
