18 Academicians Gather at NWU: “NWU-HKU Joint Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences” is Established

On the morning of March 6, the Northwest University- University of Hong Kong Joint Center for Earth and Planetary Scienceswas inaugurated and held an academic seminar, which is the first time that this type of scientific research center was established in Northwestern China.

Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS): Zhang Guowei, Zhai Mingguo, Shu Degan, Yang Shufeng, Gao Rui, Chen Xiaofei, Yang Jingsui, Hou Zengqian, Pan Yongxin, Peng Jianbing, Li Xianhua, Zhao Guochun, Hu Ruizhong, Zhu Min, Xie Shucheng, Zhang Shuichang, Fang Xiaomin, Cao Jinbin, Vice President of the University of Hong Kong Gong Peng, Vice Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Shaanxi Province Bai Chongjun, Director of Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education of the Peoples Republic of China Zhu Xiaodong, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department of the Xian Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology Li Jianxun, Chairman of NWU Council Jiang Lin, NWU Vice President (presiding over administrative work) Sun Qingwei and representatives of the University of Hong Kong , the Universitys faculty and students attended the unveiling ceremony and academic seminar. The meeting was presided over by Chen Fulin, Vice President of Northwest University.

Academician Zhao Guochun, Director of the Center, introduced the basic situation of the "NWU-HKU Joint Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences". He pointed out that scientific leadership must be emphasized in the research of earth and planetary sciences, and that the two universities will give full play to the complementary role of the analytical and testing platforms, planetary science talents and other resources, deeply participate in the national deep space exploration program, and produce international cutting-edge research results, so as to bring the cooperation between the two universities to a new level.

The deliberation session was hosted by Academician Hou Zengqian, and the participating academicians and experts carried out in-depth discussions on the construction of the Joint Center from the aspects of talent cultivation, multidisciplinary cross-research, and talent team construction.

The establishment of the Joint Center for Earth and Planetary Science between Northwest University and the University of Hong Kong aims to respond positively to the national strategy of science and technology innovation and the requirements of discipline construction, and to jointly carry out teaching and scientific research in Earth and planetary sciences, and to conduct in-depth studies on important scientific issues such as the formation and early evolution of the Earth, the pre-tectonic plate tectonics and continental-life origins, the Moon and comparative planetary sciences, planetary geologic evolution, the geological role of extraterrestrial dynamics, astrobiology, and the planetary magnetic field evolution and habitability.
