On December 19, Governor Zhao Gang visited in Northwest University. He emphasized that it is necessary to thoroughly study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important expositions on education as well as the important speeches, instructions, and directions during his inspections in Shaanxi. It is also essential to fully implement the Party's education policy, fulfill the fundamental task of fostering talents through education, base on its own characteristic advantages, promote the construction of “Double First-Class” universities with high standards, and better support and serve high-quality development and modernization drive.
The China-Central Asia Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Human and Environment Research is a national foreign scientific and technological cooperation and innovation platform that takes the cultural heritage and geological environment along the Silk Road as its research objects. Zhao Gang got a detailed understanding of the laboratory’s construction, foreign exchanges and cooperation, talent cultivation and other progress. He hoped that the joint laboratory would be developed and utilized well, that in-depth exploration into the process of collision, integration and exchanges among different civilizations would be carried out, and that, together with Central Asian countries, strong scientific support would be provided for promoting the inheritance of civilizations, the prosperity of science and technology and the connection of people’s hearts along the Silk Road. In the State Key Laboratory of Continental Dynamics, Zhao Gang listened to the introductions on the laboratory team building, the progress of key research projects and other situations, had in-depth exchanges with scientific researchers, and encouraged them to carry forward the spirit of scientists, always face the international academic frontiers, adhere to the combination of basic research and applied research, strive to produce more competitive and influential achievements, and play a greater role in building the national strategic scientific and technological strength.
In the Museum of Northwest University, Zhao Gang gained an in-depth understanding of the university’s historical evolution, teaching staff, construction of key disciplines, scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation and other achievements, and listened to the introductions on the achievements of Central Asian studies and Silk Road archaeological work. He pointed out that Northwest University has a long history of operating the university and profound academic accumulations. In recent years, it has achieved many breakthrough results, cultivated a large number of high-quality talents, and made outstanding contributions to the development of the country, the western region, especially Shaanxi. He hoped that the university would always adhere to the original aspiration and mission of educating people for the Party and the country, focus on the direction of the integrated reform of education, science and technology and talents, closely follow the times, base on its characteristics, actively innovate, focus on improving the quality of talent cultivation and the level of university operating, and continuously make new breakthroughs in promoting the construction of “Double First-Class” universities. It is necessary to always adhere to the “Four Orientations”, steadily promote the construction of key disciplines, key laboratories and key teams, strengthen major original research and frontier interdisciplinary research, do a good job in introducing and cultivating high-level talents, take the “Three Reforms” as the lead, strengthen the in-depth integration of industry, academia and research, and promote more scientific research achievements to move out of the laboratory and onto the production line. It is necessary to give play to the geographical and disciplinary advantages, continuously deepen Central Asian studies, do a good job in Silk Road archaeological cooperation, heritage protection, cultural exchanges, talent cultivation and other work, and contribute the strength of Northwest University to high-quality joint construction of the “Belt and Road”.
