NWU Holds the 2023 Standardized Chinese Character Reading and Writing Competition

On October 11th, NWU hosted the 2023 Standardized Chinese Character Reading and Writing Competition at the Changan Campus. The competition was organized by the Language and Writing Committee of Northwest University, with the participation of the National Language and Writing Promotion Base (Northwest University) and the School of Liberal Arts. Teachers from the National Language and Writing Promotion Base (Northwest University) served as judges for the competition, with over 100 students including some international students from various departments, including the School of Liberal Arts, the School of History, the School of Public Administration, and the Department of Geology.

In her address, Professor Feng Ge from the School of Liberal Arts emphasized that the purpose of the competition is to promote the excellent Chinese language and writing culture, enhance the language and writing abilities of students, and underscore the importance of proper Chinese character writing in daily learning and life. She encouraged students to pay attention to correct Chinese character writing and usage, and to cultivate the habit of writing Chinese characters in a standardized manner and speaking Standard Mandarin.

The Standardized Chinese Character Reading and Writing Competition was divided into three categories: group competition, undergraduate individual competition, and international student individual competition. The competition assessed participants language and writing abilities in four aspects: Chinese character dictation, standard stroke order, correct pronunciation, and correction of common Chinese character usage mistakes. This competition is one of the high-quality activities organized by the National Language and Writing Promotion Base (Northwest University) and is held annually during the National Mandarin Promotion Week. The competition contributes to the promotion of standardized language and writing use in universities, the creation of a campus culture centered around literature, and the dissemination of excellent traditional Chinese culture.
