On August 19, a seminar on NWU's participation in the construction of China-Pakistan Earth Science Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the “China-Pakistan Center”) was held on the Taibai Campus of Northwest University. Cui Peng, Executive Deputy Director and Chief Scientist of China-Pakistan Center, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of China-Pakistan Center, Sun Qingwei, President of NWU, leaders of related departments and representatives of faculty attended the seminar. The seminar was hosted by Prof. Chen Fulin, Vice President of Northwest University.
In his speech, Sun Qingwei introduced the achievements of the NWU’s integration into the construction of “the Belt and Road”. He said that based on the solid foundation of the previous work and cooperation, NWU has sufficient confidence in participating in the joint construction of China-Pakistan Center, and believes that with the joint efforts of all the collaborative departments, China-Pakistan Center will make new and greater contributions to the promotion of the high-quality development of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” and the construction of the Community with a shared future for mankind.
Mr. Hong Tianhua introduced the background, significance, orientation and objectives, achievements and work plan of China-Pakistan Center.
Academician Cui Peng hopes that through the co-construction, on the basis of the traditional direction of cooperation, combining science, engineering and humanities, looking for new breakthrough points of cross-disciplines, to better serve the major needs of the national disaster prevention and mitigation, so that the construction of the China-Pakistan Center will become a pivot and support platform for the study of South Asia in Northwest University, and a bridge to deepen the cooperation with Pakistan, and to sustainably push the internationalization of the relevant disciplines construction, scientific research and talent cultivation in Northwest University.
In the exchange session, the participants carried out discussion around the“Construction Plan of Northwest University to Participate in the Construction of China-Pakistan Center”. The person in charge of each relevant unit and faculty representatives introduced the subject areas, research teams, achievements and expectations of cooperation in the construction of China-Pakistan Center. The compilation team of Geography of Pakistan reported the compilation of each chapter.
The China-Pakistan Earth Science Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is jointly established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, headquartered in Islamabad, Pakistan, with the University of Jinnah, Pakistan, as the foreign dependent unit, and the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the domestic dependent unit. The China-Pakistan Center started its preparations in 2019 and is officially established in 2023. Focusing on natural disasters, climate change and ecological degradation along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the China-Pakistan Center will jointly carry out systematic geo-scientific research and cooperation with scientific research institutes and universities of the two countries to provide scientific decision-making and engineering support for the construction of the “Belt and Road” and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and scientific and technological support for the sustainable development of the region.
