From April 19 to 20, 2025, the Academic Symposium on Ancient Syrian History and Civilization was held at NWU.
Organized by NWU’s School of History, School of Foreign Languages of Northwest University (School of Country and Region Studies), Syria Research Center of the School of Country and Region Studies, and Journal of Foreign Studies, the conference brought together over 20 experts and scholars from more than a dozen universities and research institutions, including the University of Vienna (Austria), Peking University, and Northeast Normal University.
The symposium consisted of keynote speeches and panel sessions. Participants delivered remarks on topics such as Syria in the Early Islamic Period, Syrians in East Mediterranean Trade (Prehistory to 1000 CE), Hebrew Culture as a Derivative of Mesopotamian, Syrian, and Egyptian Cultures, Historical Research on Hittite Kings’ Activities in Northern and Central Syria, Phoenician Migration to Cyprus and Its Characteristics, and Three Key Issues in the Study of Ancient Syrian Civilization.
Following the conference, attendees visited an exhibition of fine ancient Syrian cultural relics.
