Recently, Clarivate Analytics updated the latest data in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database for July 2025. Physics at Northwest University (NWU) has entered the global top 1% for the first time. This marks another achievement in enhancing the university’s academic reputation following its 14th Party Congress. The university now has 13 disciplines ranked in the global top 1%, including Chemistry, Geosciences, Materials Science, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Agricultural Sciences, Plant & Animal Science, Environment/Ecology, Biology & Biochemistry, Social Sciences, General, Computer Science, and Physics. Notably, Chemistry has entered the global top 1‰. The number of disciplines ranked places NWU tied for 55th place among Chinese mainland universities and 3rd place among universities in Shaanxi Province.
The ESI database categorizes 22 subject fields. It is a quantitative analysis database based on over 10 million records from more than 12,000 scholarly journals worldwide indexed in Clarivate’s Web of Science. It serves as one of the key indicator tools for measuring research performance, tracking disciplinary trends, and assessing the international academic standing and influence of universities and academic institutions across countries/regions.
