On October 27, 2025, the 10th International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM 2025) announced the winners of its various awards. XIN Zhouping, an alumnus of NWU from the Class of 1978, was awarded the 2025 ICCM Mathematics Contribution Award in recognition of his dedication and contributions to mathematical science. Previously, XIN Zhouping won the Gold Award of the ICCM Mathematics Award (formerly the Morningside Medal) at the 3rd International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians in 2004.
The International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) was initiated in 1998 by the internationally renowned mathematician, Academician Shing-Tung Yau. It aims to promote academic exchange and cooperation among Chinese mathematicians and enhance their influence in the international mathematical community by organizing annual academic conferences and presenting awards for outstanding papers. Held every three years, the Congress has become the largest and most influential top-level academic event in the international Chinese mathematics community. The awards established by the ICCM are often referred to as the “Chinese Fields Medal.”
The ICCM Mathematics Contribution Award, which was conferred upon Alumnus XIN Zhouping this time, was established in 2022. It is awarded to distinguished and highly respected leading mathematicians in the field of mathematical science, recognizing their lifetime outstanding contributions to the advancement of Chinese mathematics.
XIN Zhouping studied and worked at Northwest University from 1978 to 1984, earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1988.
